Nepalese Activists Demand Vegetarian Sacrifice of Coconuts and Pumpkins
When I think of Nepal, I conjure up images of spectacular mountain ranges and beautiful natural scenery—not mass slaughter. But that’s exactly what goes on at the Dashain Festival, an annual event in which thousands of innocent animals are cruelly butchered as part of a sacrificial ritual.
Local Nepalese activists were so concerned about this barbaric distortion of their ancient ways that they took to the streets dressed as the goddess Kali, who demanded “vegetarian sacrifices” (pumpkins and coconuts) in lieu of flesh. These brave heroes for animals wanted everyone to remember that culture is no excuse for cruelty.
Of course, animals aren’t barbarically slaughtered only in rituals or festivals. Billions of pigs, cows, and chickens are penned up in horrifying conditions and subjected to unimaginable horrors before being forced to endure painful deaths in slaughterhouses.
