James Cromwell Urges Egyptian Government to End Rampant Animal Abuse

Posted on by Abigail Forsyth

Legendary actor and Academy Award nominee James Cromwell sent an urgent letter to Egypt’s minister of tourism and antiquities, Sherif Fathy, calling on him to take immediate action to end the widespread abuse of camels and horses who are forced to haul tourists at the pyramids in the sweltering heat.

These animals on the Giza plateau endure joyless lives. PETA investigations have documented that handlers violently whip exhausted horses and camels, who have little access to food, rest, shade, or veterinary care.

“Egyptian authorities have chosen to shut their eyes to the extreme and obvious cruelty that horses and camels are subjected to.” — James Cromwell

In the letter, Cromwell highlights that the Egyptian government had pledged to make meaningful changes following a PETA investigation in 2019 that first revealed the horrific abuse of horses and camels at the country’s most popular tourist attractions. However, PETA’s latest mini-documentary shows that nothing has been done to end the cruelty.

“Egypt is a magical place with so much to see and experience, but no one wants to have cruelty to animals included in their travel plans.” — James Cromwell

Tourists who pay to take horse or camel rides keep these cruel operations in business. If you’re traveling anywhere, please avoid animal rides.
