5 Easy Ways to Help Animals This World Oceans Day
1. Help Stop SeaWorld From Setting Up Shop in Dubai
Even though its business is failing in the United States, SeaWorld wants to take its abusement park to Dubai, a tourist destination known for innovative and exciting architecture, luxury shopping, and beautiful beaches—not animal abuse. Earlier this year, SeaWorld announced that it will no longer breed orcas, and while we know that orcas will not be imprisoned at a SeaWorld park in Dubai, other marine animals such as bottlenose dolphins, beluga whales, seals, and many more, will suffer.
What You Can Do
Urge the government of Dubai to say NO to SeaWorld.
2. Tell Canada to End Its Shameful Seal Slaughter
Each year, the Canadian government gives hunters the green light to bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals. During the slaughter, baby seals—many of whom are 3 months old or younger—are shot or repeatedly clubbed.
What You Can Do
Please write to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canadian ambassadors around the world to demand that they end the massacre immediately.
3. Help Free Pezoo From Captivity at Sea World
Pezoo—a polar bear living in captivity at Shenzhen Xiaomeisha Sea World in China—has known nothing but deprivation for his entire life. Since being moved to Sea World more than three years ago, he’s lived alone, out of the daylight, in a 30-square-meter concrete-and-glass enclosure with only a tiny pool in which to swim.
Pezoo is not an exhibit, a photo op, or anyone’s property. He’s an individual who feels loneliness and depression as intensely as we do and who desires companionship and happiness as deeply as we do.
What You Can Do
Please urge Shenzhen Xiaomeisha Sea World’s CEO to release him to a sanctuary where he can engage in natural types of behavior and live the rest of his days in peace.
4. Avoid All Marine Parks and Aquariums
In marine parks around the world, orcas exist in tanks barely longer than the length of their bodies, dolphins are used as tourist photo props, and fish of all species live in a world measured in liters. These intelligent, social, and complex animals are denied everything that is natural and important to them.
What You Can Do
Please pledge never to visit any place that profits from live animals. Ticket sales mean misery for these animals.
5. Speak Out for ALL Ocean Inhabitants
Did you know that lobsters, crabs, and other sea animals feel pain? Because lobsters, for example, do not have a centralized nervous system—but instead have ganglia, or masses of nerve tissue, spread throughout their bodies—their agony can be prolonged. A lobster’s nervous system continues to function even after the animal has been dismembered.
What You Can Do
The easiest thing that you can do to help all sea animals is not to eat them.
