Photo Op: ‘Dogs’ on Oxygen to Warn Passersby That Flat-Faced Breeds Suffer for Life

What:                 A pack of PETA supporters dressed as bulldogs, boxers, and pugs carrying oxygen tanks will descend on Bonifacio Global City on Tuesday to alert the public to the breathing difficulties of flat-faced dog breeds and urge them to adopt dogs and never to buy “purebred” ones from pet shops, pet markets such as Cartimar or Tiendesitas, or breeders. The action will draw attention to the multitude of health problems that these breeds endure due to their grotesquely distorted airways, which cause them to pant, snort, wheeze, and struggle just to breathe—all in order to achieve a particular look.

“Would-be animal guardians should know that flat-faced dogs can’t chase a ball or enjoy a walk without gasping for air and that many of them die prematurely,” says PETA  Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA urges everyone to adopt from their local rescue group or city pound, which will help keep more bulldogs, boxers, and pugs from being brought into this world only to suffer.”

A number of countries—including Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway—have banned or restricted the breeding of some or all flat-faced dogs.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
