Animals have personalities. They play, learn, and think, and they don’t deserve to be served for dinner—in Bangkok or anywhere else.
*****
If you really want to immerse yourself in Thai food and culture, take it to the streets. In Bangkok, street food is plentiful, and much of it is or can be ordered vegan. Keep your eyes peeled for pad Thai, mango sticky rice, fresh coconut, and khanom krok—a sweet treat made of rice flour, sugar, and coconut milk. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Bangkok in autumn, consider attending the city’s Vegetarian Festival. This year, the festival will be held from September 28 to October 7 in Bangkok’s Chinatown.
