Little Dog, Beaten for Refusing to Pull Man on Cart, Rescued by PETA in China

Posted on by PETA

After a viral video emerged showing a heartless man beating a little dog who refused to pull him around on a cart, PETA tracked down the guy’s location and rescued his two dogs.

The man had hitched the small dog to a cart so that he could be pulled alongside moving vehicles in Shanghai’s Pudong district in China. In the video, the man savagely beats the dog with a stick multiple times. Although the video shows one dog, our team found two at his house. We were also told that the man used to have other dogs.

We live-tweeted the story, posting updates showing our team standing outside his house waiting for him to come home. At first, he refused to hand over his dogs, but we refused to leave until we had custody of them. Finally, he relented and gave them to us.

This video is another reason why China needs to enact basic animal-welfare laws. A dog shouldn’t be forced to pull a human, and it’s inconceivable that “man’s best friend” would be beaten mercilessly for being unable to pull a man several times his size and weight.

Animal abusers are a danger to everyone.

Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that’s not confined to animal abuse. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals don’t stop there—many of them go on to harm their fellow humans.

What You Can Do

If you see anyone abuse an animal, don’t be silent. It only takes a moment to change the life of an animal facing cruelty and exploitation. If you don’t speak up, who will?

Please also stay away from horse-drawn carriages, circuses, and zoos, because animals in those industries often face similar abusive treatment for not obeying.
